Lesson 5 of 6
Personal settings that save time
7 min
Filters and variants speed up one app at a time. A handful of launchpad-wide settings speed up every app you open. Ten minutes spent here repays itself within a week, and it removes a whole class of "wrong company code" mistakes.
Default values
In the user menu (your initials or picture in the shell bar), Settings includes a section for default values in systems where it is set up. There you can store values such as your company code, plant, sales organization or purchasing group. Apps that support default values prefill their filters and entry fields with them. For Maria, entering company code 1710, sales organization 1710 and plant 1710 means every supporting app opens already scoped to Detroit.
| Setting | Where | Saves you | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default values (company code, plant, sales organization) | User menu → Settings | Retyping the same organizational values in every app | Filters prefilled without you noticing |
| Language and region (date, number, time formats) | User menu → Settings | Misreading 03/04 as March or April; decimal confusion in exports | Exports and screenshots carry your format, not your colleague's |
| Appearance (theme, display density) | User menu → Settings | Eye strain; more rows per screen in compact mode | Screenshots look different from training material |
| Home page personalization | Edit the page or space where allowed | Hunting for tiles you use daily | Personal changes may hide new tiles that administrators add |
| Search | Search icon in the shell bar | Navigating menus to find apps and recent objects | Search shows only apps and data your roles allow |
Language, region and formats
Date, number and time formats follow your settings. Contoso is a US company, but its project includes colleagues who expect day-month-year dates and comma decimals. Agree a format for evidence and screenshots, or at least state it, so that 03/04/2026 is never misread. When you export, the spreadsheet receives the values; your spreadsheet's own locale then decides how they are shown.
Home page and search
Your home page is built from the spaces and pages assigned to your roles. Depending on how administrators have set it up, you may be able to personalize pages: add tiles from the App Finder, move or remove tiles, and create your own sections. Keep a small personal section at the top with the five apps and saved tiles you use every day.
The search in the shell bar finds apps by name and, depending on configuration, business objects such as a sales order number or a supplier name. It also keeps recent searches. For many users, typing "supplier line" into search is faster than any tile layout. The user menu typically also shows recent activity and frequently used apps, which is a quick way back to something you opened yesterday.
A personal setup routine
- Set default values for the organizational units you work in.
- Check language, date and number formats; agree a format for shared evidence.
- Build a personal section on your home page with your daily apps.
- Save tiles for the two or three variants you open every day.
- Learn to start rarely used apps from search rather than adding more tiles.
What would you do?
A Contoso tester reports that Manage Sales Orders "shows no Chicago orders", although orders exist for plant 1720. Filters look empty at first glance. What should she check first?
- Default values prefill organizational fields across apps; know which ones you carry.
- Language and region settings decide date and number formats; state them on shared evidence.
- Personalize a small daily section on your home page; use search for occasional apps.
- Saved tiles plus defaults plus variants give one-click, correctly scoped views.
- Record the test user's defaults and formats at the start of a test cycle.
