Lesson 2 of 5
Maintenance milestones
8 min
The deadline that starts most transformation programs is SAP's maintenance commitment for ECC. It is worth knowing the dates exactly and their conditions, because they are often quoted wrongly in steering committees. Maintenance means SAP's support: corrections, legal changes such as tax updates, and security fixes. Running without it is possible, but it is a risk that grows every year.
The 2020 announcement
In February 2020, SAP announced that it would provide mainstream maintenance for the core applications of SAP Business Suite 7, which includes SAP ERP 6.0, until the end of 2027, followed by optional extended maintenance until the end of 2030 for an additional fee. In the same announcement SAP committed to maintaining SAP S/4HANA until at least the end of 2040. These remain the reference dates for most planning.

The 2025 transition option
In 2025 SAP announced the SAP ERP, private edition, transition option. It is aimed at customers with complex landscapes who cannot complete their move by 2030. In SAP's description, it is a time-bound subscription that provides business continuity for ECC from 2031 to 2033, and it comes with conditions: the systems must first move to SAP ERP, private edition, on SAP HANA, before the end of 2030, under a RISE with SAP contract, and further prerequisites apply. SAP has updated the terms since the first announcement. Treat this option as a safety net with a price, not as a plan, and always check the current terms with SAP.
- Can we be live on SAP S/4HANA before the end of 2027?Yes → plan for that; no maintenance bridge needed · No → next question
- Can we be live before the end of 2030?Yes → budget extended maintenance for the gap · No → next question
- Do we meet the conditions for the private edition transition option?Yes → evaluate its cost and prerequisites with SAP · No → plan for customer-specific maintenance risk and accelerate
SAP S/4HANA has its own release clock
Moving to SAP S/4HANA does not end the maintenance conversation. For on-premise and Private Edition, SAP announced that from the SAP S/4HANA 2023 release it moves to a two-year release cycle, with feature packages in between and seven years of mainstream maintenance for each release. SAP S/4HANA 2025, the release this course is written for, followed in late 2025. So a company going live on 2025 must plan its next upgrade within that release's maintenance window. Public Edition is upgraded by SAP on SAP's schedule, which raises a different kind of planning question, covered in the next lesson.
| ECC (SAP ERP 6.0) | SAP S/4HANA on-premise and Private Edition | |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance horizon | Mainstream to end of 2027; optional extended to end of 2030 | SAP commitment to 2040; each release maintained for a fixed period |
| Release rhythm | Enhancement packages, no new releases | New release every two years from 2023, with feature packages between |
| Per-release maintenance | Not applicable | Seven years of mainstream maintenance per release from 2023 |
| What it means for testing | One big transformation project | Transformation, then regular upgrades that each need regression testing |
What would you do?
A Contoso steering committee member says: "SAP extended ECC to 2033, so there's no hurry." What is the most accurate reply?
- ECC core applications: mainstream maintenance to end of 2027; optional extended maintenance to end of 2030 for a fee.
- SAP committed to maintain SAP S/4HANA until at least the end of 2040.
- The 2025 private edition transition option covers 2031 to 2033 for qualifying customers, with conditions and cost.
