Lesson 1 of 5
Why SAP S/4HANA
8 min
For two decades, SAP ERP 6.0, usually called ECC, ran the finance, supply chain and manufacturing of a large share of the world's industrial companies. SAP S/4HANA is its successor. It is not an upgrade of ECC with a new version number. It is a new product, built only on the SAP HANA in-memory database, with a simplified data model and a new user experience. Moving to it is therefore called a transformation: something changes in technology, in data, and often in process and in the way people work.
What is different underneath
The data model change is the one practitioners feel most. In ECC, finance and controlling kept separate tables, plus aggregate and index tables, that had to be reconciled. In SAP S/4HANA, the Universal Journal stores one line item per posting for both, and totals are calculated on the fly. Inventory works similarly. Customers and vendors are now business partners. Credit management, output management and other areas use new components. The full list of such changes is published by SAP as simplification items, which the transition courses cover in detail.
Business drivers
- Faster, simpler finance: one source of truth for financial and management accounting shortens reconciliations and the period-end close.
- Real-time operations: stock, open orders and margins visible on live data rather than overnight extracts.
- Standardized processes: a chance to drop years of workarounds in favor of SAP Best Practices and fit-to-standard design.
- Access to innovation: SAP delivers new functions, embedded analytics and AI capabilities on SAP S/4HANA and its cloud offerings, not on ECC.
Technical drivers
- Maintenance: SAP has set end dates for ECC mainstream and extended maintenance (next lesson).
- Platform: ECC on other databases does not get SAP HANA's capabilities; S/4HANA requires it.
- Clean core: moving is a chance to reduce custom code and modifications, and to build extensions in a way that survives upgrades.
- Skills and ecosystem: partners, tools and talent are moving to SAP S/4HANA, and ECC skills get scarcer every year.
| Area | ECC (SAP ERP 6.0) | SAP S/4HANA |
|---|---|---|
| Database | Several databases supported | SAP HANA only |
| Finance data | Separate FI and CO tables, totals and indexes | Universal Journal line items; totals calculated |
| Customers and vendors | Customer and vendor masters | Business partner with customer and supplier roles |
| User experience | SAP GUI transactions | SAP Fiori apps, with SAP GUI still available on-premise and in Private Edition |
| Analytics | Often extracted to a separate warehouse | Embedded analytics on live data, plus warehouse where needed |
What would you do?
At Contoso's kickoff, the plant manager in Chicago says: "It's an upgrade. IT can do it over a weekend, and we'll carry on." How should Grace respond?
- SAP S/4HANA is a new product on SAP HANA with a simplified data model, not an upgrade of ECC.
- Key changes: Universal Journal, business partner, Fiori user experience, embedded analytics.
- Business drivers: simpler finance, real-time operations, standard processes, innovation.
- Technical drivers: maintenance dates, SAP HANA platform, clean core, skills.
