Lesson 1 of 5
The sales analytics landscape
9 min
In SAP ECC, sales reporting often meant a nightly update of statistics tables, a list report such as VA05, or an extract to a separate data warehouse. SAP S/4HANA adds embedded analytics: analytical apps that read the live sales documents directly through a layer of CDS views (the virtual data model), with no separate statistics tables to update. When Maria saves an order, it appears in the incoming-orders figures straight away.
The app families
Sales analytics apps fall into a few families. You do not need to memorize app IDs, but you should know which family answers which kind of question, because availability and exact names vary by release and edition. Use the SAP Fiori apps reference library, filtered to your release, to confirm what you have.
| Family | Examples | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Overview pages | My Sales Overview (internal sales representative); Sales Management Overview (sales manager) | What needs my attention today? |
| Fulfillment monitoring | Sales Order Fulfillment issue apps (analyze and resolve issues) | Which orders are stuck, and why? |
| Flexible analysis | Incoming Sales Orders – Flexible Analysis, Sales Volume – Flexible Analysis | How are orders and sales trending by customer, product, period? |
| Open sales | Sales Volume – Check Open Sales and similar | What is ordered but not yet delivered or billed? |
| KPI tiles | SAP Smart Business tiles with targets and thresholds | Are we on target? Red, amber or green? |
Overview pages
My Sales Overview is the daily entry point for an internal sales representative. It is a set of cards, for example open quotations, open sales orders, blocked credit memo requests and customer returns, each of which navigates to the app where the work is done. Sales Management Overview serves the sales manager with cards such as incoming sales orders and sales volume, filtered by sales organization or customer. Both can be personalized: users can hide and reorder cards.
Who sees what
Analytical apps respect the same authorizations as transactional ones. If Maria is restricted to sales organization 1710, the incoming-orders figures she sees include only 1710. That matters for testing: two users can open the same app and see different totals, and both may be correct. When you validate a figure, always record which user, role and filters produced it.
- Business questionFor example: how much did Great Lakes Fleet Services order this quarter?
- Pick the app familyTrend by customer and period → flexible analysis
- Set filtersSales organization 1710, sold-to Great Lakes Fleet Services, creation date in Q2
- Read the measureNet value of incoming orders in the display currency
- Drill to documentsNavigate from the figure to the list of orders behind it
Classic list reports have not disappeared. VA05 (list of sales orders), VF05 (list of billing documents) and the outbound delivery monitor are still available in private cloud and on-premise systems, and key users rely on them. They are document lists, though, not analytics: they show documents, not aggregated measures with targets. In this course, document lists are what you reconcile analytics against.
What would you do?
Grace, the PMO lead, asks whether Contoso should rebuild its ECC sales reports (based on statistics tables and a nightly update) in SAP S/4HANA. Dan wants the same numbers on day one. What is the best recommendation?
- Embedded analytics reads live sales documents through CDS views; no statistics update is needed.
- App families: overview pages, fulfillment monitoring, flexible analysis, open sales and KPI tiles.
- My Sales Overview serves sales representatives; Sales Management Overview serves sales managers.
- Apps respect authorizations, so record user, role and filters with every figure you validate.
- Check the Fiori apps reference library for your release; names and availability vary.
