Week 6 of 8
Payroll parallel testing
Payroll is where a Workday go-live is judged. Workday’s Test stage plans two payroll parallel cycles: the same pay periods run in the legacy system and in Workday, with results compared. In Workday’s Launch Express guidance, payroll history is also checked against legacy quarterly tax reports.
Workday does not publish a tolerance. You and finance set it, before cycle 1, not after the first surprise.
This week: agree tolerances and build the reconciliation
- Agree tolerances with payroll and finance before cycle 1: per total line, per employee, and the share of employees that must reconcile. Headcount must match exactly.
- Reconcile totals first: gross, each earning, pre-tax and post-tax deductions, each employee and employer tax, net pay and the accounting posted.
- Log every employee-level difference with a root cause: configuration, conversion data, time input, benefits setup, tax setup, retro, rounding, or a legacy error.
- Treat "legacy error" and "expected design change" as explained. Everything else needs a fix and a retest in the next cycle.
- Run the same pay calculation in Sandbox and Sandbox Preview in every release window after go-live.
