Writing SAP Test Cases and Test Scripts That Survive Handover

Keep this: job aid

  • One outcome per case: ID, version, objective, traceability, priority, owner.
  • Preconditions are checkable: system and client, role, master data, stock, open periods, upstream cases.
  • Unmet precondition = blocked, not failed.
  • No literal document numbers in steps: reference a data set and variant; capture created documents as runtime values.
  • Expected results must be able to fail: check content, status, follow-on documents and postings, not just messages.
  • State the rule and the source of truth; keep the computed value in the data sheet.
  • Intent-level steps; field detail only where the field drives the result; entry point (Fiori app or T-code) in its own field.
  • Make waits for jobs and output explicit; state postconditions and cleanup.
  • Review with a checklist; log location, item, severity, suggested fix; verify before approval.
  • Transferability test: someone outside the team runs five random cases and reaches the same verdicts.
