Change and Release Management Fundamentals for SAP

SAP change and release card

  • Standard: pre-approved, low-risk, repeatable. Normal: assess, approve, build, test, approve, deploy. Emergency: fast approval, minimum safe test, retrospective review.
  • Emergency never means bypassing the transport path.
  • Publish a release calendar built around close, year-end, peaks, audits and SAP update windows.
  • Freezes: emergency changes only.
  • Link every transport to an approved change; put the change ID in the transport description.
  • Test what will be deployed: latest transport versions, same sequence as production.
  • Close each change with a post-implementation check in production.
  • Separate build from deploy and approve; developers do not import to production.
  • A CAB reviews risk, test evidence, timing and rollback, then decides.
  • Track the share of emergency changes and review every one.
